We all remember the James Bond movie Diamonds Are Forever. Who can forget the last scene? With all diamonds glittering high up in the space. We also know all there is to know about the Kohinoor Diamond. While we may not be able to afford to buy that big a diamond, smaller ones are within reach. And our fascination with this sparkling crystal is age-old. We all love to owe a piece of a perfect diamond. So, what are the things to keep in mind while buying the perfect gem?

Women know that they have to look for cut, colour, clarity, and carat. But men are confused about what this is. Here’s a quick look at what this means. But first, you have to understand that the colour of a diamond is graded by letters.

Perfect diamond

It is one that is colourless. But these are rare and therefore expensive.  The yellowish or brown tinge of a diamond will determine its colour grade. But some diamonds are purposely coloured – they are fancy.  But for most, grades of D, E or F are considered colourless, G, H and I are called near colourless. The rating goes from there.  Flaws inside diamonds are called inclusions. Most inclusions in diamonds cannot be seen with the naked eye.

Before you go out and purchase a diamond, you should read this guide to make sure you don’t get stuck with an over-priced, low-quality rock.

What to look for

When shopping for jewellery, keep in mind the price. Be wary of cheap jewellery when shopping for someone close to you. Be cautious of buying jewellery that is on sale. Sometimes jewellers put certain pieces on sale because they simply want to get rid of old stock. Pay close attention to how well the diamond is cut. The more the diamond has been cut and formed, the better it is.

Where to shop

It is of the utmost importance to shop for diamonds from a reputable person. Trust your instincts. It is very important that you are able to trust the store where you are purchasing the diamond. If they are trustworthy, they will be able to walk you through the process and show you all the various options that are available. This is one of the first things that you need to understand is perhaps something that you are going to hear more and more frequently as you research purchasing diamonds.

The C’s of diamonds can help you to determine the diamond values and how it is going to look when all is said and done.

The cut

In a diamond, a cut is a very important thing as it is responsible for its brilliance. Diamonds are available in raw form. They are cut accurately and then polished to bring them to a state of brilliance. Cutting diamonds is a science.

Only people equipped with this technology can do it. The value of a diamond is brought out in its cuts. Proper cut manifolds the value of a diamond whereas a very brilliant diamond can also be doomed with a bad cut. It is performed with deep, shallow or with perfect length. These different types of cuts have significance attached to it. In a deep cut, the light escapes from all the sides. Because of this, the diamond looks dull and darker.

The clarity & colour

The most expensive diamonds are colourless stones. But there still exist some amounts of colour in almost all the diamonds, which is not visible to the naked eye. There are six groups in total under which they are graded. They are the D group that carries the best. The other categories are F, G-H, which possess less colour, I-J, K-J is the least expensive of all the diamonds as they have a hazy look on them.

Carat

While buying a diamond this is the most important thing that you should keep in mind. A carat in simple terms is the mass of a diamond. One carat can be comparable to 200 mg. The biggest diamond carries a carat size of 5 and the smallest of 0.25.

You are never going to be able to get a diamond that is absolutely faultless, at least when it is looked at through some form of magnification. You may be able to get your diamond at a more affordable price if you compromise a little bit in the colour or clarity. The carat weight is something that is going to be determined in advance but you may be able to save money by shaving a little bit off of the carat weight.

But remember, cut grade is the king! If a brilliant diamond stone is not cut well, then the colour, certification and clarity don’t matter. How do you recognize whether a diamond is well cut or not? First, move out of the spotlights. Assess the way the diamond illuminates under natural light settings. Do you like the sparkle and amount of light being reflected? Or do you notice too many shadowy zones? If you are not happy with it, move on to the next diamond.

It is important to understand that you will come across many details related to a diamond. The easiest way to get a specialist’s opinion about the diamond. The four elements that dictate the market price of a diamond stone is what should establish your preference of the gem.

For example, let’s say diamond colour is rather crucial to you. You need to opt for a stone with a colour score of D, E, F or G. But the colour difference between a G colour and a D can’t be differentiated without comparing them side by side.

The cost change amongst these two brilliants is not less than 30 per cent. Accordingly, G colour is a very good choice for someone choosing colour as an essential component. People who are ready to trade size over whiteness can choose H degree of whiteness or even I.

Considering carat, please keep in mind that there are critical ranges that change the market price of a diamond considerably. A 0.52-carat diamond stone is considerably pricey compared to one with a 0.47. The same goes regarding 0.97 and 1.05 Carat, 1.42 and 1.52. Someone shopping for a brilliant diamond can always trade a minor amount of weight for a higher cut or colour quality.

What about clarity? The FL, VVS1, VVS2, VS1 and VS2 all seem identical to the human eye. But a brilliant diamond with FL class clarity is at least much more overpriced than that with a clarity grade of SI1. If you are particular about clarity do not go below VS1 or VS2 clarity grade. If you only worry about how the brilliant diamond appears, choose an SI1 or perhaps SI2. This way you can spend on a better colour or larger carat weight.

Buying jewellery is never a cakewalk. But if you follow certain guidelines, you can end up buying the perfect diamond for your loved one!

What you need to know about Transient Ischaemic Attack

Winter is here. Therefore, it is important to diagnose Transient Ischaemic Attacks. This can help to identify a patient who is at risk for subsequent stroke and prevent the same

An episode of stroke in any family is devastating. The sad part is that it can result in premature death and lifelong disability. In India, the incidence rate of stroke is estimated to be 119-145 per lakh. This means that there are 1.44 to 1.64 million cases of strokes annually. Unfortunately, when we do not heed the warning signs of stroke, we end up becoming victims of this devastating episode.

One such sign is a Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) or a mini-stroke. The risk of stroke in the first three months after a TIA is 2-17%. About 33% of those with a history of TIA have a major stroke within a year if not treated. Hence, it is important to raise awareness about TIA so we can alert ourselves regarding the subsequent stroke.

TIA cause

When the blood flow to the brain cuts off for a short while (less than 5 minutes) it causes transient neurological symptoms. This is similar to observed in stroke but is rapidly reversible. This is known as TIA. TIA is also referred to as mini-stroke because it is like a miniature version of a full-blown stroke. It causes less damage but it sure needs emergency care without delay.

The difference

When an artery that is supplying blood to the brain gets blocked due to a blood clot, it causes oxygen starvation resulting in TIA. In a TIA, such a temporary clog is generally pushed along and is broken down. The normal flow of blood to the brain returns quickly.

Symptoms of a TIA usually subside within an hour (typically less than 15 minutes) but may last up to 24 hours in some cases. In an ischemic stroke, the brain goes oxygen-deprived for a longer period. This causes more damage and brings long-lasting effects that can be fatal and cause permanent disability or death.

Risk

Apart from the risks that are not under our control like age and family history, generally, women have a higher risk of stroke/TIA than men. Obesity, carotid artery disease, high BP, high cholesterol, Diabetes, and preexisting heart conditions are also found to increase the odds of stroke/TIA. Excess smoking, alcohol consumption, eating foods high in cholesterol, and using drugs such as amphetamines, cocaine and heroin can increase the risk.

Symptoms

We must attempt to remember the term FAST — Face, Arms, Speech, Time. These are seen if a person is having a TIA. These include:

The facial droop may be observed where the eyes or mouth may droop to one side. One may also experience trouble smiling.

Problems related to speech such as slurred, garbled, or difficult to understand. Also, one may find it difficult to gather the right words.

Weakness or numbness of limbs may be experienced.

There might be trouble lifting or holding up the arms.

One may also notice balance and coordination related troubles, blindness or transient blurring of vision, inability to move one side of the body, dizziness, confusion, and difficulties in understanding others.

Changes to make

After knowing about TIA, it is important to make efforts to have a better lifestyle and adopt preventive measures to reduce the risk of experiencing a TIA/stroke. These include:

  • Quitting smoking and avoiding exposure to second-hand smoke from tobacco.
  • Eating a healthy and nutritious diet that includes a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Having a check on the excessive intake of salt and fats
  • Exercising regularly
  • Keeping away from recreational drugs.
  • Maintaining ideal body weight.

Following the advice of the specialist and or timely treatment plan for heart disease, Diabetes and other health conditions can go a long way in managing TIA. A person can live a healthy life for a long time.

Management

Diagnosis is generally established through a full body physical examination. Neurological tests and various imaging techniques (MRI, Angiography), medications like blood-thinners, anti-cholesterol medications with or without the use of minimally invasive procedures (carotid angioplasty/stenting) and surgical procedures (Carotid endarterectomy) may be advised depending upon the severity of TIA.

When the symptoms of a TIA strike one should get medical help immediately. It must be remembered that there is a lot of uncertainty about whether the blood flow will restore on its own or not. It is impossible to predict if one is having a TIA or stroke because the symptoms are more or less the same. Given the present pandemic, it can lead to blood clots in the vessels supplying the brain. This can subsequently progress to TIA and stroke.
