Novak Djokovic vs Roger Federer

Serbian star Novak Djokovic has scripted history after breaking Roger Federer’s record of most weeks spent as world no.1 in the official ATP rankings.

After adding another feather to his illustrious cap, Djokovic said it has taken a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to break Swiss star Roger Federer’s record of 310 weeks ranked as world no.1.

Achievements help him to snatch record

Djokovic created an unassailable lead at the top with scintillating victories at the 2020 Rome Masters, the 2020 Cincinnati Masters, and 2021 Australian Open despite the ATP rankings were frozen for a few months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, Djokovic reclaimed the top spot from Rafael Nadal in February 2020 and finished as year-end no.1 for the 6th time, tying the milestone set by former American Pete Sampras, who held the total weeks’ record of 286 until Federer surpassed him in the month of July 2012.

Czech-American Ivan Lendl stands at 4th with 270, and American ace Jimmy Connors is next at 268.

ATP introduced its computer rankings in 1973

Since the ATP introduced its computer rankings in 1973, there have been several all-time legends that have occupied the coveted top spot. From Romanian Ilie Nastase, who was the first player to be recognized by ATP as the world no. 1, to Novak Djokovic, there have been 26 players in the Open Era who have been ranked no.1 in the men’s rankings.

Eying to script Grand Slam history

In his career, Serbian star has gone on to win five trophies at the All England Club, along with nine at the Australian Open, three at the US Open, and one at the French Open. His total of 18 grand slam singles trophies trails Federer and Nadal’s 20 grand slam titles for the men’s mark.

Roger Federer is the only star, male or female, to be ranked No. 1 for four consecutive years. Federer is also the only player ever to grab the top rankings for more than 200 consecutive weeks, a record that is likely to stand the test of time.

Reigning Wimbledon champion Simona Halep has pulled out of Wimbledon 2021 because of a calf injury. She had earlier withdrawn from the French Open after injuring herself during a match at the Italian Open in mid-May.

In the Instagram post, Simona said “It is with great sadness that I’m announcing my withdrawal from The Championships as my calf injury has not fully recovered,” Halep, who had beaten Serena Williams 6-2, 6-2 in the 2019 Wimbledon final.

Halep secured her second Grand Slam singles crown beating Serena Williams in 2019 — due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Grand Slam event was cancelled last year. She joins four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in withdrawing.

“I gave it everything I had in order to be ready to play Wimbledon and after having such special memories from two years ago, I was excited and honoured to step back on these beautiful courts as defending champion.”

However, with doubts also over the fitness of world no.1 Ashleigh Barty, it could be like cheery on the cake for the 39-year-old Williams as she seeks a record-equalling 24th singles Grand Slam title.

“Unfortunately, my body didn’t cooperate and I’ll have to save that feeling for next year. I can honestly say that I’m really down and upset about having to take this decision. This period has been difficult but to miss the last two majors has made it even more challenging mentally and physically,” She added.

“We will see what the future holds but I’m hoping it will make me a stronger person and athlete. Thank you to everyone at Wimbledon for your understanding and support.”

Halep’s withdrawal came shortly before the start of the draw at the All-England Club. The Wimbledon is set to start on Monday.

Wrestler Sushil Kumar

Today not only in India but across the globe, players or athletes from any sports Cricket, Football, Boxing or Formula One are not able to control their activities after earning huge fame. In other words, they are completely failed to protect that legacy which they have achieved by doing hard work.

There are plenty of sports legends performing at the top levels. They are all very well compensated and enjoy the fringe benefits that accompany fame and being at the supreme position of their profession. We hold these athletes up and admire them for their talent.

But, when these sports personalities representing their country wore the uniform of criminals, it is very heartbroken and demotivates not only thousands of youngsters but also their parents and their dreams.

Do you know! The entire episode has shocked the nation and made people curious to know the exact reason behind the former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu’s involvement in the 1988 road rage case. Similarly, in the same fashion the Indian wrestler Sushil Kumar’s involvement in the murder case.

Sushil Kumar Case:

A flat in Delhi’s Model Town is the reason behind the entire incident, according to the sources. Sushil Kumar and his associates are named in the FIR lodged for the murder of former junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankhar at the Chhatrasal Stadium in the national capital.

The victim, Sagar Dhankhar, was beaten during a fight involving rival wrestlers at the capital’s wrestling academy on 4 May, and later died in the hospital. Dhankhar, as well as being a former junior national champion, was the son of a Delhi police officer.

After his involvement in the murder case, the licensing branch of Delhi police has suspended his arms license.

The FIR lodged against Sushil Kumar and his associates have invoked the following sections under the Indian Penal Code:

Section 302: Punishment for murder

Section 308: Attempt to commit culpable homicide

Section 365: Kidnapping or abducting with an intention to keep in confinement

Section 325: Voluntarily causing grievous hurt

Section 323: Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt

Section 341: Punishment for wrongful restraint

Section 506: Punishment for criminal intimidation

Navjot Singh Sidhu Case:

On December 27, 1988, former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu and his friend – Rupinder Singh Sandhu – had entered into an argument with the victim, Gurnam Singh, over a parking space in Patiala. The two allegedly dragged Mr. Gurnam out of his car and hit him. He died soon after in the hospital.

In the autopsy, the reason for death is a Heart attack. A trial court had discharged Mr. Sidhu, but the Punjab and Haryana High Court held him guilty of culpable homicide in 2006 and sent him to jail for three years in the road rage case.

The cricketer-turned-politician and his friend then approached the Supreme Court. In 2007, the Supreme Court suspended Mr. Sidhu’s sentence and granted him bail. The suspended sentence enabled him to contest the Lok Sabha bypolls from Amritsar.

Earlier this year, a bench headed by Justices Chalemeswar and Sanjay Kishan Kaul let the two off with a fine of 1,000 rupees, because “there was no evidence to prove that that the death was caused by the single blow” dealt by Mr. Sidhu.

Similarities between the case:

Naomi Osaka’s withdrawal from the French Open has an important message to convey..

Naomi Osaka

The world No 2 ranked Osaka announced her withdrawal from the French Open on June 1. The sporting fraternity is divided over her obligations towards the game. However, there is a much bigger issue at hand.

Players withdrawing from a tournament is not news nor is it something new. Earlier, in the day Petra Kvitova withdrew from the French Open due to an ankle injury during her media obligations on Sunday after her first-round victory over Greet Minnen.

Sad Day for Tennis:

However, for the world ranked No 2 Naomi Osaka who chose her mental wellbeing and withdraws rather than fulfill her media obligations is a message that can’t be ignored and should get sidelined in the whole discussion of what a player’s obligation ought to be – to promote the game — as Mithali Raj stated.

Yes, while it is important for the players to promote the game that they are playing, one has to see the bigger picture here. This last one-and-a-half-year has been tough for everyone around the globe.

Stress and Anxiety played a major role

For some, it has been tougher. Stress and anxiety have played a huge role in the minds of the people due to the lockdown restrictions imposed by various Governments across the world. The question here is not about media obligations or to further a sport that is already played the world over.

The issue here is about a player who is talking about her mental state. The present pandemic has definitely been tough on the athletes who have to train around the year six to seven hours a day. For them to be cooped inside the home is more of a mental challenge than a physical one.

We all remember the video that went viral last year of Virat Kohli playing cricket where he lives with Anushka Sharma during lockdown last year; it just goes to show that players need to be constantly in touch with the game. Being away can cause worry as has been the case with Osaka.

One has to also remember that few celebs or for that matter athletes actually come out in the open and talk about their mental status. The fact that Osaka has been brave enough to do so and chose her health over the game says a lot about what this present pandemic has done.

Mental Health needs to be addressed:

Over the years, there have few athletes who have opened up and talked about their mental health. Andrew Luck, the quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts announced his retirement.

He said at a Press conference in August 2019: “The only way forward for me is to remove myself from football and this cycle I’ve been in. I’ve come to the proverbial fork in the road, and I made a vow to myself that, if I ever did again, I would choose me.”

Black Lives Matter Mask:

Since the start of the US Open, Osaka has walked on the court wearing masks with the names of Black Americans who have died in encounters with police or due to racial injustice.

During this year’s U.S. Open, Naomi Osaka wore seven different face masks for each round of the annual tournament.  Osaka wore masks with the names of Breonna Taylor, Elijiah McClain, Ahmaud Arbery, Trayvon Martin, George Floyd, Philando Castile, and Tamir Rice.

Naomi Osaka needs to be given a hall pass!
