For a person to be called healthy, there are various parameters. It is not just about outward health but to be fit mentally, physically and spiritually. Only then is it possible to achieve a perfectly balanced body and mind? Although allopathy has brought many life-saving developments, what is missing is spiritual wellness. Holistic health plays an important role and is essential.

What is holistic health?

It is a healing method that looks at the whole person: body, mind, and spirit. This form of healing includes many alternative and complementary healthcare treatments that sometimes overlap with medicine but go beyond the unique treatment of symptoms to treat more than just the body.

There are several alternative approaches to holistic health: Massage; herbalism; mediation; acupuncture; Reiki and physiotherapy to name a few. A person is likely to achieve wellness at a deeper level when all of these treatments come together for natural holistic healing.

What is holistic medicine?

Holistic medicine can be defined as a type of alternative medicine that encompasses the concept that every aspect of the spiritual, mental and physical aspects of the self work together to create health and happiness.

Holistic medicine is entirely different from conventional medicine. It is a kind of treatment that emphasizes the complete wellness of a body. Holistic therapy works to find out the roots of the illness instead of lowering down the symptoms of illness as allopathy does.

What is holistic therapy?

Holistic therapy of achieving good health has been used since ancient times. This therapy has gained significance and popularity in the past few years. Today, it is considered the most useful method of achieving good health and wellness.

Many hospitals train their nurses in learning various holistic methods of treatment. A good combination of vitamins and minerals can significantly help in relieving symptoms like hot flashes, mood swings, and depression. Holistic therapy is based on taking care of the whole body and related points instead of focusing on the particular organ.

Due to the present pandemic, people are stressed, anxious, depressed and scared. We are eating foods that are nutrient-depleted and exposed to toxic materials through the air and water; we need holistic health. Holistic health takes into account several external and environmental factors that could encourage or influence our overall health and well-being. The following are the five elements of holistic health.

We look beyond the human body when it comes to holistic wellness; we must look at physical, social, spiritual, mental, emotional, and intellectual health. All of these five elements allow a person to live in the healthiest, happiest way possible.

Physical health

When we talk about health, it is about physical health. Our body always gives us ideal or sub-optimal health physical signs. These signs are easier to monitor. There are key activities that support physical well-being. These includes:

Eight hours of sleep each night. This will allow the body to rest and repair.

Eat a balanced diet of nutrients that is high in foods derived from plants.

Limit processed foods and artificial sweeteners that can increase disease risk.

Everyone will benefit from at least 30 minutes of activity every day.

Keep your blood and sugar levels balanced.

Social health

People are happy when they have a strong connection with their friends, families, and culture. Here are some ways you can support your social well-being.

Set boundaries in your life with individuals that may increase tension or generate toxic energy. Avoid such people.

Make time to communicate in person. Technology has helped us to feel more connected, virtual connections do not provide us with the same degree of satisfaction as in-person connections.

Engage in the surrounding community. Participating in the local community is one of the best ways to help your social well-being and promote happiness.

Spiritual health

It does not necessarily mean you need to become religious. Your spiritual well-being should concentrate on how you relate to your inner soul and the broader world around you. These are the three ways you can support your spiritual health.

Spend some time in meditation each day. It helps the mind to focus and centre it, taking away the stress of the day.

Take out time to practice religion. Whatever according to you is right.

Spend some time in nature.

Intellectual health

This overlaps with our emotional and physical health. The main difference between our mental and emotional health is that our emotional health refers to everyday mood. Our mental health refers to intellectual abilities that control the brain’s functioning. Here are some of the ways to improve your mental and emotional health.

Eat nutrient-dense foods with high antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids to help minimise overall inflammation and improve cognitive abilities.

Always keep your mind engaged. Play games that keep the brain agile. There are many puzzles that you can buy online and play. This will keep the mind sharp.

Improve digestive health with foods that cure the gut, such as bone broth and fatty foods with prebiotics and probiotics.

Emotional health

Emotional health is just as important as our physical health. If it is not prioritised, our emotional health can affect our physical health. Some ways in which you can support your emotional health.

Note down your thoughts and feelings. Remember what you are grateful for. Use your diary.

Seek counselling if required. Therapy is an essential component of our mental well-being.

Learn mindfulness and stress-reducing practices.

It does not matter whether an individual is working on a daily or part-time basis. Everyone has to put in their best effort in order to survive in the respective professions. People who can take help of holistic healing are:

Adults who are office goers free themselves from the built-up stress and tensions.

Old and aged people who want to explore new levels of spirituality.

People who have just recovered from a serious illness, and would like to embrace a whole new level of healing.

College students are victims of pressure relating to studies and workload.

People who are involved in some profession require both mental and physical labour.

While the body has natural healing abilities. Holistic healing and alternative health solutions support the body in healing itself. Holistic therapy provides a complementary alternative healing method to standard medicine. Holistic health care includes alternative natural health remedies, like herbal healing, and an abundance of health and wellness products and services.

Wellness means various things to each person. And being healthy allows each individual to achieve their individual goals. You can pursue and reach your goals with less resistance when your body, mind, and soul are cared for holistically.

Focus on the main elements of holistic well-being to assess your customized approach to healthy living. Find out the ones that need your attention the most. It is also important to note that reinforcing each one will provide a strong base for your happiest, healthiest life to live. So, incorporate some positive changes in your lifestyle to excel in both personal and professional life!

What you need to know about Transient Ischaemic Attack

Winter is here. Therefore, it is important to diagnose Transient Ischaemic Attacks. This can help to identify a patient who is at risk for subsequent stroke and prevent the same

An episode of stroke in any family is devastating. The sad part is that it can result in premature death and lifelong disability. In India, the incidence rate of stroke is estimated to be 119-145 per lakh. This means that there are 1.44 to 1.64 million cases of strokes annually. Unfortunately, when we do not heed the warning signs of stroke, we end up becoming victims of this devastating episode.

One such sign is a Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) or a mini-stroke. The risk of stroke in the first three months after a TIA is 2-17%. About 33% of those with a history of TIA have a major stroke within a year if not treated. Hence, it is important to raise awareness about TIA so we can alert ourselves regarding the subsequent stroke.

TIA cause

When the blood flow to the brain cuts off for a short while (less than 5 minutes) it causes transient neurological symptoms. This is similar to observed in stroke but is rapidly reversible. This is known as TIA. TIA is also referred to as mini-stroke because it is like a miniature version of a full-blown stroke. It causes less damage but it sure needs emergency care without delay.

The difference

When an artery that is supplying blood to the brain gets blocked due to a blood clot, it causes oxygen starvation resulting in TIA. In a TIA, such a temporary clog is generally pushed along and is broken down. The normal flow of blood to the brain returns quickly.

Symptoms of a TIA usually subside within an hour (typically less than 15 minutes) but may last up to 24 hours in some cases. In an ischemic stroke, the brain goes oxygen-deprived for a longer period. This causes more damage and brings long-lasting effects that can be fatal and cause permanent disability or death.

Risk

Apart from the risks that are not under our control like age and family history, generally, women have a higher risk of stroke/TIA than men. Obesity, carotid artery disease, high BP, high cholesterol, Diabetes, and preexisting heart conditions are also found to increase the odds of stroke/TIA. Excess smoking, alcohol consumption, eating foods high in cholesterol, and using drugs such as amphetamines, cocaine and heroin can increase the risk.

Symptoms

We must attempt to remember the term FAST — Face, Arms, Speech, Time. These are seen if a person is having a TIA. These include:

The facial droop may be observed where the eyes or mouth may droop to one side. One may also experience trouble smiling.

Problems related to speech such as slurred, garbled, or difficult to understand. Also, one may find it difficult to gather the right words.

Weakness or numbness of limbs may be experienced.

There might be trouble lifting or holding up the arms.

One may also notice balance and coordination related troubles, blindness or transient blurring of vision, inability to move one side of the body, dizziness, confusion, and difficulties in understanding others.

Changes to make

After knowing about TIA, it is important to make efforts to have a better lifestyle and adopt preventive measures to reduce the risk of experiencing a TIA/stroke. These include:

  • Quitting smoking and avoiding exposure to second-hand smoke from tobacco.
  • Eating a healthy and nutritious diet that includes a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Having a check on the excessive intake of salt and fats
  • Exercising regularly
  • Keeping away from recreational drugs.
  • Maintaining ideal body weight.

Following the advice of the specialist and or timely treatment plan for heart disease, Diabetes and other health conditions can go a long way in managing TIA. A person can live a healthy life for a long time.

Management

Diagnosis is generally established through a full body physical examination. Neurological tests and various imaging techniques (MRI, Angiography), medications like blood-thinners, anti-cholesterol medications with or without the use of minimally invasive procedures (carotid angioplasty/stenting) and surgical procedures (Carotid endarterectomy) may be advised depending upon the severity of TIA.

When the symptoms of a TIA strike one should get medical help immediately. It must be remembered that there is a lot of uncertainty about whether the blood flow will restore on its own or not. It is impossible to predict if one is having a TIA or stroke because the symptoms are more or less the same. Given the present pandemic, it can lead to blood clots in the vessels supplying the brain. This can subsequently progress to TIA and stroke.

Remember, a child learns the most in his first five years of age. In the first five years, experiences and relationships stimulate children’s development, creating millions of connections in their brains. A child’s brain develops connections faster in the first five years than at any other time.

It is therefore important to give the child the best that there is so that he has an all-around development. It will help him get the edge that this competitive world needs today.

Disclaimer: There are several other such platforms in the market today. The attempt here is to introduce a few of them and not to be considered as gospel truth.  Parents can choose whatever is best for their children.
