Foods for the body: Here’s what to eat

The festival season is here and that means eating lots of sweets and fried items. It also means that you may put on weight. Why not eat go on a small diet before the real eating begins.

The festival season is here and that means eating lots of sweets and fried items

There are some foods that are better than others. They not only are full of vitamins they have plenty of minerals and nutrients that are good for the body. The added advantage is that these are very good for people who want to lose weight. What these foods do is to eliminate fat cells, this is what you have to achieve, get rid of the fat cells that store the fat that we consume.

Foods that help to burn fat are items that you can eat for a healthy diet. As these foods are loaded with nutrients, protein and fibre these are the best categories of food to eat for those who want to shed weight.

Foods for burning fat

That burn more calories than the food itself provide (like celery)

Those hold elements that burn body fat (like calcium)

That restrain the appetency and thus enable you to remove unnecessary stored fat (like grapefruit)

That enables you to stay full and hence empower you to use up undesired body fat (like good fats and fibre-rich food)

That food that improve metabolism (like chilies).

Negative calorie foods are foods that call for more calories to assimilate than the nutritional value they enclose. By eating these fat-burning foods, you lose more calories than you gain.

Calories

Many proteins are very high in calories and fat. In other words, they can be ingested in almost any quantity. For this reason, these proteins are tougher to digest. Therefore, the body burns more calories. There are many snacks that are high in fat and sugars. They won’t fill you up.

Coffee and some energy drinks will help dissolve fat by burning more calories. The mantra to fat burning is to eat and drink until you are filled and satisfied. An advice: Steer clear of fast-food restaurants and avoid eating junk food.

Metabolism

There are certain foods that can raise your metabolism. These monitor the body’s capability to burn fat. Practically all lean meats accelerate the metabolism and burn more fat just because they demand so much energy for full digestion. Protein piles lean muscle which amplifies your metabolism as well. Take an example. Whole grain nutrients keep your metabolism high. And what’s best is that the metabolism boost persists for hours after eating.

Nature shows the way

Fat burning foods make the body work stronger in order to process them. Natural chemicals in apples control fat absorption and help you get rid of superfluous body fat. If you eat these foods, there is natural weight loss when you start integrating foods that burn fat into your diet.

Salad

A salad with low-fat dressing or vinegar and oil are great ways to fill you up without adding calories and fat.  The salad should have lots of vegetables but pasta or potatoes. Use lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, green peppers, zucchini, carrots, broccoli and cauliflower.

Watch the salad dressing!  Don’t eat a little salad with a whole lot of dressing. Use only 1-2 tablespoons of low-fat dressing. Add a few nuts or sunflower seeds.  A strict no-no to croutons!  Croutons are loaded with butter and fat!

Soup

Keep soup broth-based. No cream soups. Use lots of vegetables.  If you like cheese with your soup, use low-fat cheese and limit the amount you use.  Don’t load up on crackers; and make sure they are low fat.

Watermelon

Don’t think of watermelon just in the morning at breakfast. You can eat this all year round if you can find it in the market. It is a great source of beta carotene and lycopene which not only helps in weight loss, but in building a good immune system.

Grill Your Vegetables

A great way to eat veggies is to grill them, not fry. Eggplant, zucchini, carrots, onion, asparagus, and tomatoes taste fantastic when grilled. Brush both sides with just a little bit of olive oil and spices and put them on the grill along with the chicken. If you don’t have a grill, use a kadhai and saute the veggies.

Low calorie or calories drinks

Be sure to drink plenty of water.  It is the best beverage to drink.  Tea is also good but don’t go overboard with the sugar.  Diet drinks may have zero calories or very little calories, but they aren’t healthy.  Cut back a little bit at a time on soft drinks. But you still need to drink water throughout the day.

Fruits

Fruits are a great substitute for high-fat and high-calorie desserts. A slice of pie or a couple of cookies sound divine but try a fruit salad. They are fun to eat and aren’t as boring.  Fruit juice is also a good low-calorie beverage.

Chickpeas

Also known as Bengal gram in eastern countries, chickpeas are known to lower cholesterol. It is yet another healthy food loaded with fibre. It also gives a little more than 25 per cent of daily iron needs.

Apples

Not only does it keep the doctor at bay, but it also helps to lose weight as well. It has lots of fibre that cleanses and Vitamin C that helps in burning fat. It also contains antioxidants that help the body regenerate damaged cells.

Chilli

Just because you’re on a diet doesn’t mean you should hold out on the spices. Studies have proven that spicy foods have a thermogenic effect on the body. In other words, it speeds up metabolism, thereby helping you burn off more calories.

Putting pepper in food also helps you eat more slowly. You can’t just wolf down spicy food. Eating slowly gives your brain time to register the feeling of fullness so overeating is avoided.

Grapefruit

Grapefruit has become a fad. It is undoubtedly true that it helps you lose weight, a diet consisting of nothing but grapefruit can do more harm than good in the long run. Eating at least three servings a day along with a regular diet could help you lose weight without resorting to an all-grapefruit diet.

Part of the citrus family, it is highly acidic which may contribute to its fat-fighting ability. Loaded with Vitamins A, C and antioxidants, it’s healthy food.

Before trying out any diet programme, don’t forget to take the doctor’s advice. Keep in mind that weight loss doesn’t equal starvation. There is a rule of thumb: To keep when trying to lose kgs, less calories plus more activity equals less weight.

Fat burning foods are rich in fibre and protein and are poor in fat. They are in plenty of supply and cheap. Since these foods are not processed, changed, coloured or re-created, they are a natural way to shrink the fat tissue in the body.

All of the above foods can be eaten alone as a meal or combined with other low-fat food items to make a meal. Meals don’t have to be boring just because you are trying to lose weight. Experiment and have fun!

An episode of stroke in any family is devastating. The sad part is that it can result in premature death and lifelong disability. In India, the incidence rate of stroke is estimated to be 119-145 per lakh. This means that there are 1.44 to 1.64 million cases of strokes annually. Unfortunately, when we do not heed the warning signs of stroke, we end up becoming victims of this devastating episode.

One such sign is a Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) or a mini-stroke. The risk of stroke in the first three months after a TIA is 2-17%. About 33% of those with a history of TIA have a major stroke within a year if not treated. Hence, it is important to raise awareness about TIA so we can alert ourselves regarding the subsequent stroke.

TIA cause

When the blood flow to the brain cuts off for a short while (less than 5 minutes) it causes transient neurological symptoms. This is similar to observed in stroke but is rapidly reversible. This is known as TIA. TIA is also referred to as mini-stroke because it is like a miniature version of a full-blown stroke. It causes less damage but it sure needs emergency care without delay.

The difference

When an artery that is supplying blood to the brain gets blocked due to a blood clot, it causes oxygen starvation resulting in TIA. In a TIA, such a temporary clog is generally pushed along and is broken down. The normal flow of blood to the brain returns quickly.

Symptoms of a TIA usually subside within an hour (typically less than 15 minutes) but may last up to 24 hours in some cases. In an ischemic stroke, the brain goes oxygen-deprived for a longer period. This causes more damage and brings long-lasting effects that can be fatal and cause permanent disability or death.

Risk

Apart from the risks that are not under our control like age and family history, generally, women have a higher risk of stroke/TIA than men. Obesity, carotid artery disease, high BP, high cholesterol, Diabetes, and preexisting heart conditions are also found to increase the odds of stroke/TIA. Excess smoking, alcohol consumption, eating foods high in cholesterol, and using drugs such as amphetamines, cocaine and heroin can increase the risk.

Symptoms

We must attempt to remember the term FAST — Face, Arms, Speech, Time. These are seen if a person is having a TIA. These include:

The facial droop may be observed where the eyes or mouth may droop to one side. One may also experience trouble smiling.

Problems related to speech such as slurred, garbled, or difficult to understand. Also, one may find it difficult to gather the right words.

Weakness or numbness of limbs may be experienced.

There might be trouble lifting or holding up the arms.

One may also notice balance and coordination related troubles, blindness or transient blurring of vision, inability to move one side of the body, dizziness, confusion, and difficulties in understanding others.

Changes to make

After knowing about TIA, it is important to make efforts to have a better lifestyle and adopt preventive measures to reduce the risk of experiencing a TIA/stroke. These include:

  • Quitting smoking and avoiding exposure to second-hand smoke from tobacco.
  • Eating a healthy and nutritious diet that includes a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Having a check on the excessive intake of salt and fats
  • Exercising regularly
  • Keeping away from recreational drugs.
  • Maintaining ideal body weight.

Following the advice of the specialist and or timely treatment plan for heart disease, Diabetes and other health conditions can go a long way in managing TIA. A person can live a healthy life for a long time.

Management

Diagnosis is generally established through a full body physical examination. Neurological tests and various imaging techniques (MRI, Angiography), medications like blood-thinners, anti-cholesterol medications with or without the use of minimally invasive procedures (carotid angioplasty/stenting) and surgical procedures (Carotid endarterectomy) may be advised depending upon the severity of TIA.

When the symptoms of a TIA strike one should get medical help immediately. It must be remembered that there is a lot of uncertainty about whether the blood flow will restore on its own or not. It is impossible to predict if one is having a TIA or stroke because the symptoms are more or less the same. Given the present pandemic, it can lead to blood clots in the vessels supplying the brain. This can subsequently progress to TIA and stroke.
