We all know the importance of staying hydrated and drinking water. But did you know that it helps you maintain body fluids and boosts the immune system?

We all know the importance of staying hydrated and drinking water. But did you know that it helps you maintain body fluids and boosts the immune system?

Look at the definition of the word water. Water is defined as a clear, colourless, odourless, and tasteless liquid. Water is also the most widely used of all solvents and for good reason. Almost 70 per cent of the human body is made of water so drinking plenty of it should be obvious. We all know water is good for us and that we should plenty of it. Yet there are many people out there who don’t even manage to drink eight glasses of it in a day! Why is it so difficult to sip from what is the fountain of youth? Well, some may argue that they drink fluids – tea, coffee and juice. But believe it or not, this is not enough. The book is titled Your Body’s Many Cries for Water by Dr Fereydoon Batmanghelidj is an eye-opener! Many health risks decrease when you drink plain water. Let’s take a look at how it can help.

Balances body fluids

The body is composed of about 70 per cent water and performs vital functions like protecting your organs and tissues, regulating your body temperature and carrying nutrients and oxygen to your cells. In other words, it keeps your body running like a well-oiled machine.

Skin looks healthy

Water moisturizes the skin and functions as a protective barrier to prevent excess fluid loss. It is like a free anti-aging cream. It can also keep skin fresh and smooth.

Boosts immune system

Did you know that those people who drink plain water regularly are at a lower risk of getting ill? A long list of modern diseases can be practically eliminated by just drinking more water. The list includes and is not limited to: asthma, hypertension, back and joint pain, arthritis, constipation, allergies, ulcers and the list goes on and on.

Water helps fight against flu, cancer and other ailments. More so if the water has mild alkaline properties. Including ionised water in the daily intake can give your immune system a boost through added antioxidants, improve aerobic capacity, enhance energy levels and through a patented technology that alters the molecular structure of water, hydrate your body more fully.

Help control calories

Drinking water may not be a weight-loss strategy, but substituting it for sugar-filled beverages can help by removing by-products of fat. It acts as a natural appetite suppressant and raises metabolism. When you drink water, your stomach gets full and your appetite decreases. You end up eating fewer calories. If you drink water before each meal, you’ll prevent yourself from eating thousands of calories in the long run.

Drinking water burns extra calories

When you drink water, your body burns extra calories. Drinking 500 ml of water increases your metabolic rate by about 30 per cent for about 40 minutes. This is called Water Induced Thermogenesis. The total amount of extra calories burned by drinking 500 ml of water is about 25 calories. Drinking 2.1 litres of water amounts to 100 extra calories. That is a lot of calories when you count.

Burn more fat and build more muscle

If you are dehydrated, it decreases protein synthesis. Protein synthesis is what builds muscle. When you suppress protein synthesis, fewer calories end up building proteins and more calories end up in fat. Dehydration has been shown to decrease maximal strength. When you are stronger, you can lift more weight and that means you’ll build more muscle.

How much water should you drink?

There is simple math involved. Drink 30 ml of water for every 900 gm of bodyweight plus one-and-one-half additional ml of water for every ml of beverage you consume containing caffeine, carbonation or alcohol. Do this every day. As you increase your water intake you should also increase your salt intake.

If you increase your water intake to eight glasses per day, in about a week’s time, you will notice that you have more energy, your mind is clearer, your skin is healthier, and your food digests easier. Water will help you lose weight, remove toxins from your body, and help absorb nutrients and vitamins. If you are still confused, don’t worry consult your doctor.

The Institute of Medicine suggests that women should drink 2.2 litres of water daily. Men on the other hand should drink 3 litres. But the actual amount of water a person needs will vary on the individual. The average adult urinates approximately 1.5 litres of water every day. You also lose another litre by sweating so the daily water recommendations a person drinks should have higher standards.

If you don’t drink water

Dehydration occurs when your body does not have an adequate supply of water in the body. Dehydration will cause muscle weakness and not allow your food to digest properly. You can also expect a gain in water weight since your body will start holding water just to keep itself with enough water for survival. Headache, fatigue, dry mouth, and even constipation is common.

If you really want to have great health, you can drink your way to it. Water is the substance of life. The majority of people are dehydrated, and they don’t even realise it. About 80% of the people on earth are dehydrated. Just because you don’t feel thirsty, doesn’t mean you can’t be dehydrated. Being thirst has nothing to do with dehydration.

You may think that you get enough water because you drink beverages that have water like coffee, tea, and sodas. Even though these beverages are made with water, when they are ingested, they actually cause you to lose water! What you need is plain and simple water.

We can’t live underwater yet approximately 83 per cent of our blood is water, 75 per cent of our muscles are water, 22 per cent of our bones are water, and 74 per cent of our brains are water. Our brains even float around in the water! It is obvious from the percentages that we require water to live. The water in our bodies is lost every minute of every day — through sweat, tears, and urination – and simply through our pores. Even as you are reading this article, you are losing water right now. Reach out for a glass of water, right this minute since water needs to be replenished.

Not just any water will do. You should avoid drinking tap water. Go with bottled water or boil it, cool and then drink. Tap water in our country generally is full of toxins that you don’t want in the body.

This, of course, doesn’t mean that you should not drink other fluids. But remember, drink one glass of water for every cup of coffee or tea you have, as well as for every soda, and one glass of water for every cigarette you smoke and one glass of water for every glass of an alcoholic drink that you have. If you have an unhealthy habit, you may find that you end up drinking a great deal of water on an everyday basis.

The adage: Drink more water is apt.

An episode of stroke in any family is devastating. The sad part is that it can result in premature death and lifelong disability. In India, the incidence rate of stroke is estimated to be 119-145 per lakh. This means that there are 1.44 to 1.64 million cases of strokes annually. Unfortunately, when we do not heed the warning signs of stroke, we end up becoming victims of this devastating episode.

One such sign is a Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) or a mini-stroke. The risk of stroke in the first three months after a TIA is 2-17%. About 33% of those with a history of TIA have a major stroke within a year if not treated. Hence, it is important to raise awareness about TIA so we can alert ourselves regarding the subsequent stroke.

TIA cause

When the blood flow to the brain cuts off for a short while (less than 5 minutes) it causes transient neurological symptoms. This is similar to observed in stroke but is rapidly reversible. This is known as TIA. TIA is also referred to as mini-stroke because it is like a miniature version of a full-blown stroke. It causes less damage but it sure needs emergency care without delay.

The difference

When an artery that is supplying blood to the brain gets blocked due to a blood clot, it causes oxygen starvation resulting in TIA. In a TIA, such a temporary clog is generally pushed along and is broken down. The normal flow of blood to the brain returns quickly.

Symptoms of a TIA usually subside within an hour (typically less than 15 minutes) but may last up to 24 hours in some cases. In an ischemic stroke, the brain goes oxygen-deprived for a longer period. This causes more damage and brings long-lasting effects that can be fatal and cause permanent disability or death.

Risk

Apart from the risks that are not under our control like age and family history, generally, women have a higher risk of stroke/TIA than men. Obesity, carotid artery disease, high BP, high cholesterol, Diabetes, and preexisting heart conditions are also found to increase the odds of stroke/TIA. Excess smoking, alcohol consumption, eating foods high in cholesterol, and using drugs such as amphetamines, cocaine and heroin can increase the risk.

Symptoms

We must attempt to remember the term FAST — Face, Arms, Speech, Time. These are seen if a person is having a TIA. These include:

The facial droop may be observed where the eyes or mouth may droop to one side. One may also experience trouble smiling.

Problems related to speech such as slurred, garbled, or difficult to understand. Also, one may find it difficult to gather the right words.

Weakness or numbness of limbs may be experienced.

There might be trouble lifting or holding up the arms.

One may also notice balance and coordination related troubles, blindness or transient blurring of vision, inability to move one side of the body, dizziness, confusion, and difficulties in understanding others.

Changes to make

After knowing about TIA, it is important to make efforts to have a better lifestyle and adopt preventive measures to reduce the risk of experiencing a TIA/stroke. These include:

  • Quitting smoking and avoiding exposure to second-hand smoke from tobacco.
  • Eating a healthy and nutritious diet that includes a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Having a check on the excessive intake of salt and fats
  • Exercising regularly
  • Keeping away from recreational drugs.
  • Maintaining ideal body weight.

Following the advice of the specialist and or timely treatment plan for heart disease, Diabetes and other health conditions can go a long way in managing TIA. A person can live a healthy life for a long time.

Management

Diagnosis is generally established through a full body physical examination. Neurological tests and various imaging techniques (MRI, Angiography), medications like blood-thinners, anti-cholesterol medications with or without the use of minimally invasive procedures (carotid angioplasty/stenting) and surgical procedures (Carotid endarterectomy) may be advised depending upon the severity of TIA.

When the symptoms of a TIA strike one should get medical help immediately. It must be remembered that there is a lot of uncertainty about whether the blood flow will restore on its own or not. It is impossible to predict if one is having a TIA or stroke because the symptoms are more or less the same. Given the present pandemic, it can lead to blood clots in the vessels supplying the brain. This can subsequently progress to TIA and stroke.
